Minister Hargey proposals to increase affordable housing options
Date published:
Communities Minister Deirdre Hargey has launched a consultation on a proposed new affordable rent model that will increase affordable housing options here.
The consultation looks at the introduction of Intermediate Rent.
Launching the consultation, Minister Hargey said:
“Access to housing is a fundamental right. We need to look at all options to ensure that everyone has access to a good quality, affordable home.
“As part of my ambitious housing reform programme, I am investing significantly in the social housing new build programme, I have directed more funding to affordable housing through Co-Ownership and introduced a Bill through the Assembly to improve protections in the private rented sector. I am now looking to extend the affordable housing options available to people.”
“It is time we provided a wider choice to those who cannot or do not wish to buy a home.
“Intermediate rent could deliver more choice and reduce demands on other areas of our housing system.
“Intermediate Rent offers affordable, good quality, secure and well maintained and managed homes, with support services where they are needed.”
The consultation period will run from Monday 18 October 2021 – Friday 14 January 2022. The Department will meet with a range of interested parties as part of the consultation exercise. The consultation and supporting documents are available on the Department’s website
Minister Hargey continued:
“I am now seeking the views of all interested parties to help inform the development and delivery of this new supply of homes for rent.”
Intermediate Rent homes are aimed at households who wish to live in the rented sector and would struggle to afford market rents but may be able to pay above social housing rents.
