Reappointment of the Chief Commissioner to the Board of the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland

The Department for Communities has reappointed Mr Tom McGrath for a third term from 1 June 2019 to 31 July 2019.

He has been the Chief Commissioner on the Board of the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland since 1 June 2009

Notes to editors: 

  1. The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland (CCNI) was established as the regulator of charities operating in Northern Ireland following the enactment of the Charities (Northern Ireland) Act 2008. The main functions of CCNI are to keep a public register of charities; encourage, facilitate and monitor compliance with charity law; determine charity status; identify and investigate misconduct in charity administration and take remedial or protective action as necessary
  2. The board of the Charity Commission for Northern Ireland comprises a Chief Commissioner, a Deputy Chief Commissioner and five Commissioners. The Chief Commissioner receives remuneration of £5,750 per annum
  3. The reappointment has been made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland’s (CPA NI) Code of Practice 
  4. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.  However, the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland requires the political activity of appointees to be published
  5. Biographical Details: Mr Tom McGrath worked as Regional Director for Marsh Ltd for 34 years. He was previously Chair of the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (2003-2008), the Northern Ireland Business Education Partnership (2004-2006) and the George Best Memorial Trust (2006-2007). He served as a Board member of Tourism Ireland (2003-2008) and the Probation Board Northern Ireland (2000-2003). He was Director of the Ireland Funds (1998-2007) and previously served as a Committee Member of The Prince’s Youth Trust and NSPCC Special Appeal. Since retiring from insurance broking he has provided litigation support as a professional witness to Solicitors in N Ireland, England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland. Mr McGrath has declared no political activity in the last five years and holds no other public appointments
