The Department for Communities has launched a competition to appoint a Chair to the Board of National Museums NI.
National Museums NI is an arms-length body of the Department for Communities and plays a significant role within society by increasing awareness of art, history, science and culture. Through visitor programmes and exhibitions, museums capture the public’s imagination and help us to make sense of the past and thereby better shape our future. In addition, the four museums which make up National Museums NI serve as major tourist attractions and drivers for the local economy.
The Board ensures that the work of the organisation is fully advanced in line with its key policies and strategies, whilst accounting for good governance and effective use of resources in the organisation. The Chair has a particular leadership role, in a challenging operating environment, to champion and transform the work of the Board and National Museums NI, whilst embedding positive values and behaviours.
This important role provides a unique opportunity to make a positive difference within a distinctive public sector organisation. An individual with the relevant experience, enthusiasm, vision, leadership and judgement is now sought to join the Board as Chair.

Notes to editors:
- This is a competition to appoint the Chair to the Board of the National Museums NI for a term of up to four years from 1 May 2023. It is planned for the appointment decision be made by early February 2023. This is to facilitate the involvement of the incoming Chair in the public appointment competition for new Trustees to the National Museums NI Board.
- This Chair position attracts remuneration of £10,000 per annum plus reasonable expenses (including travel, subsistence and other reasonable expenses in line with NICS rates) with a time commitment of at least 36 days per year.
- This appointment will be made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Public Appointments in NI in accordance with the requirement of the Commissioner for Public Appointments NI. All appointments are based on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland requires the political activity of all public appointees to be published.
