Lenadoon and Glencolin BSC interventions completed and approximate spend
Kids Together Belfast
Funded Belfast City Council to redevelop the Kids Together play area including installation of wheelchair friendly equipment, ramp, fencing and kerbs for all 300 children to enjoy regardless of disability and weather.
First Steps Early Years Group
Refurbishment of premises at First Steps Early Years group to make it more attractive, safe and secure for the children. This included two low child toilets, with wash hand basins, a nappy changing area and an accessible toilet as well as premises re-decorating inside and out, and provision of awning for an external area all year.
Refurbishment of Lenadoon Community Counselling Project
Funding to Choice Housing Ireland Ltd for refurbishment of the Lenadoon Counselling Service centre building to bring facilities up to a modern standard and to offer additional counselling capacity to local users. This included reconfiguration for a dedicated waiting area, additional counselling room, larger administration space and upgrading of the IT infrastructure and painting and decorating throughout.
Refurbishment of Glencolin Residents Association
Funding from BSC for the refurbishment of Glencolin Residents Association premises. This included redecorating throughout, provision of new floor coverings, blinds, and furniture to make the premises a modern, secure, and accessible environment for residents and staff.
St Oliver Plunkett Football Club Pavilion
Funding to Choice Housing Ireland Ltd to refurbish the Football Club Pavilion. Prior to redecorating throughout this included making good defective plasterwork together with the replacing of skirting tiles in these areas. The roof, downpipes and gullies were all cleaned. A stainless steel sink with cold water supply was installed externally to allow for footwear cleaning.
2 x Alley-gating Schemes in Lenadoon & Glencolin
Completion of 2 alley gating schemes providing funding to Belfast City Council for a total of 33 gates and some remedial fencing work at various locations throughout Lenadoon & Glencolin area.
New Changing Facilities
Funding paid to Sport NI for construction of new changing facilities for both male and female changing/showering at Patrick Sarsfield Gaelic Athletic Club (GAE) to encourage wider community participation.
3G Pitch
Funding paid to Sport NI for construction of a floodlit 3G pitch at St Paul’s GAC whose members report that it has been a catalyst for opening up their facilities to the local community, particularly during autumn and winter nights when the grass pitch is unable to be used.
Pathway at Pylon Site, Lenadoon
A pathway was installed to create safe direct access for residents to the local services and shops at the junction of the Glen Rd/Suffolk Rd. A planned housing scheme could not be progressed as the landowner was unwilling to sell the land necessary.
Carrigart Flats - Doors and Bin Stores
Funding was provided to NIHE to install replacement front doors and bin stores at the flats. BSC funding provided 21 front doors and 6 new enhanced bin stores. The new doors will provide residents with added security as will the bin stores in addition to discourage fires, fly tipping and anti-social gatherings.
St Oliver Plunkett Primary School - Community Garden
Provision of a community garden in an amenity area within the grounds of St Oliver Plunkett Primary School. This improves the educational facilities and opportunities for local schoolchildren, parents of children who use the facility, including local elderly residents and disabled children/young people. The garden includes different zones such as growing areas, wildlife spaces, a storytelling area and outdoor classroom.
Upper Andersonstown Community, Sporting and Cultural Hub
Funding was provided to assist O’Donovan Rossa GAC in progressing existing designs, for the Upper Andersonstown Community Sporting and Cultural Hub, to a state of readiness for planning requirements and to seek to obtain full planning approval for the proposed project.
Woodbourne Environmental Improvement Scheme
This project seeks to implement traffic management and landscaping led enhancements around the Woodbourne shops and also improve the setting of the Woodbourne Crescent and surrounding “gateway” environment. Planning approval is in place and vesting of lands completed Feb 2023. The project cost will be prepared before works commence but it is estimated budget provision of £1m+ will be required. Budget cover for 2024/25 has yet to be secured.
*Replacement Units for Corrib flats (SHDP)
The replacement of flats with modern homes. All tenants have been rehoused, the three blocks of flats are demolished, and the site is cleared. Replacement units to be undertaken by Choice HA and we await a timeline with work anticipated to commence in 2023/24.
Installation of fencing at Millennium Park
Removal of the existing 1.8m bow top fencing and installation of a new 2.4m paladin fencing
BSC Intervention approximate spend (including circa £1m for Woodbourne) - £2.17 million.
*The completed housing schemes to date across the six pilot areas represent an investment of circa £7.2m with approximately £4m being provided through a Housing Association Grant. These schemes would have not been delivered without the BSC intervention.
