Historic Buildings of Local Importance
All around us are buildings that are historic and are of local importance. They set the context of our towns, cities, villages and rural areas and help make each place unique.
They may not have individual features or be of sufficient interest to mark them out as special, and therefore worthy of statutory designation as listed buildings, but their removal would be a loss to their community, local heritage and the potential tourism economy.
Identifying Historic Buildings of Local Importance allows their architectural and/or historic interest to be taken into account by the planning system.
This is also known as ‘local listing or ‘community listing’. The Strategic Planning Policy Statement 2015 (SPPS) outlines that councils may wish to take forward their own local policies to protect such buildings.
