About Haughey's Fort
The Late Bronze Age hillfort is about 350m in diameter, contained originally by three banks and ditches. Excavation of the interior and part of the ditches showed that the fort was actively occupied from about 1170 to 770 BC, at the same time as Navan Fort and King’s Stables were in use. The high quality tools and weapons from the site reinforce the impression of a military society as described in the Ulster Cycle legends. Among the animal bones found (which included the remains of cattle and pigs) were the bones of the largest known dogs of this period in Ireland. The only visible feature is an oval field bank which roughly reflects the innermost circuit.
