Communities Minister Paul Givan today announced funding of over £152,000 for a new Early Learning Centre in Newry.
The new facility will be built in the grounds of St Malachy’s Primary School at Carnagat, adjacent to the current Family Learning Centre. The centre will provide much needed additional space, introducing a range of play based activities and a soft learning facility for pre-school children, as well as improved access to programmes for parents.
Announcing the investment Minister Givan said: “The availability of enhanced play facilities at the new centre will contribute towards early childhood development, while parents will be able to avail of improved access to education and health programmes.
“The creation of extra places for pre-school children and their parents will allow for wider participation among local groups while developing better engagement with the local nursery and primary school.
“My department has been working closely with Newry Neighbourhood Partnership to tackle education deprivation in the Newry area and this project will build on the early year’s element of this by increasing opportunities for learning and physical activity.”
Work has already commenced on the project and is due to be completed by spring 2017.
