Givan announces appointment to Board of Ulster Supported Employment and Learning

Communities Minister Paul Givan has announced the appointment of a new member to the Board of Ulster Supported Employment and Learning (Usel).
The Minister has appointed Ms Carol Magill to join the Board following an open competition. The appointment will be for up to three years from 1 January 2017.
Minister Givan said: “Ulster Supported Employment and Learning is the largest single employer of people with disabilities in Northern Ireland, as well as being the provider of a wide range of employment programmes and support to assist people with disability and health-related conditions to move into employment.
“The leadership provided by the Board of Usel is central to its strategic direction and I am confident Ms Magill brings experience and expertise to the role which will make a positive contribution to the organisation.”
The Minister also took the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of outgoing Board member, Ms Judith Kelly, saying: “I would like to express my appreciation to Ms Kelly for her personal commitment and contribution to the sustainability and growth of Ulster Supported Employment and Learning during the past six years, and I wish her every success for her own future.“

- Usel is a Non-Departmental Public Body of the Department for Communities. It was established in 1962 to provide supported paid employment for disabled people. 75% of employees at its manufacturing facility in Belfast have a disability or heath related condition. Today USEL is the largest supporter of people with disabilities within Northern Ireland with offices in Belfast, Londonderry, Portadown and Omagh. Each year the company supports over 1500 people with disabilities in more than 750 companies to enter and sustain economic employment through its various employment programmes
- Board Members receive remuneration of £135 for each board meeting attended. Travel and subsistence allowances for official business will be payable. Any extra work undertaken will be paid at an hourly rate
- The appointment has been made in accordance with the Code of Practice for Ministerial Public Appointments issued by the Commissioner for Public Appointments NI
- All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland requires the political activity of appointees to be published
- Biographical details of Ms Carol Magill:
Ms Magill is a Network Manager for the Chartered Institute of Marketing in Ireland. She is a former civil servant, with roles in communication, youth training and responsibility for the ‘Generating Our Success’ strategy, and was previously a Communication/Volunteer Manager with Action Mental Health. Ms Magill holds no other public appointments and brings a range of planning and process management skills and experience to the Usel Board.
