UTV visit PRONI to observe the digitisation of archived material
Date published:
Last June, the Department announced a new partnership agreement between the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI), Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive and ITV which aims to safeguard the extensive catalogue of UTV archive material, dating back over the past 59 years.
Since then, UTV’s Natasha Miller has visited PRONI to see the archive and get an insight into the project. During her visit she spoke with David Huddleston, Head of Records Management, Cataloguing, and Access at PRONI, and Francis Jones, Heritage and Archive Manager at Northern Ireland Screen.
David and Francis provided an overview of the work being done to preserve this culturally rich archive and make it available to the public, helping to protect Northern Ireland’s screen heritage for future generations to come. Funded by DfC, this partnership aims to preserve this unique content, and to enable public access to it at PRONI and online.
With around 65,000 tapes covering political, cultural and business topics, the UTV archive is a huge resource of information.
“It was only in the archive that I could truly appreciate the scale of this project. Row after row and shelf after shelf of material that is painstakingly being preserved for future generations.”
