Active ageing
People here are living longer than ever and our older citizens make a significant contribution to society; volunteering, continuing to work or providing childcare. Locally, one in every six people is aged 65 years old or over, and by 2043 nearly a quarter of the population will be over 65.
Anti-poverty
The Poverty Policy team (Central Policy Division) has responsibility for developing, co-ordinating and driving the Executive’s priorities for tackling poverty.
Disability
The Department for Communities has lead responsibility for disability policy. Almost one in five people in Northern Ireland have a disability. We are committed to working to ensure that Northern Ireland is a diverse, inclusive and supportive society.
Gender
The Department for Communities is responsible for Gender Equality on behalf of the Northern Ireland Executive.
Inclusion & social change
In accordance with the New Decade New Approach, the Executive has agreed the indicative timetable for the development and publication of a suite of Social Inclusion Strategies for which the Department for Communities is responsible.
Sexual orientation
The Sexual Orientation Strategy aims to address barriers and inequalities in society faced by the LGBTQI+ communities and to fulfil the commitments in New Decade, New Approach and the Executive’s Programme for Government.
